What the valley climate actually does up there
People picture roof damage as a storm event, a dramatic night of wind and water that tears something loose. In South El Monte the reality is slower and far less obvious. The defining stress on a roof here is thermal, not stormy. Day after day the overhead heat expands the roofing materials, and every night they contract again as the valley cools. Repeat that cycle a few thousand times and the consequences add up. Shingle surfaces grow brittle and shed their granules, sealants pull away from the surfaces they were meant to bond to, and the felt or membrane hidden under a tile field stiffens and loses the flexibility that let it span small gaps. By the time anything is visible from the ground, the aging has been underway for years.
The weather that does arrive then finds those weakened points instead of creating new ones. A strong dry wind coming down the valley does not have to be a record event to lift a shingle whose adhesive already gave out, and a heavy winter cell does not have to be a flood to push water past a flashing joint that the heat already opened. This is the pattern we plan around. We are far less worried about any single storm than about the steady, invisible groundwork the climate lays the rest of the year, and our whole approach is built to find that groundwork before water ever gets the chance to exploit it.
